Composition profiles of InAsâGaAs quantum dots determined by medium-energy ion scattering
The composition profile along the [001] growth direction of low-growth-rate InAsâGaAs quantum dots (QDs) has been determined using medium-energy ion scattering (MEIS). A linear profile of In concentration from 100% In at the top of the QDs to 20% at their base provides the best fit to MEIS energy spectra
X-ray photoemission spectroscopy determination of the InN/yttria stabilized cubic-zirconia valence band offset
The valence band offset of wurtzite InN(0001)/yttria stabilized cubic-zirconia (YSZ)(111) heterojunctions is determined by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to be 1.19±0.17 eV giving a conduction band offset of 3.06±0.20 eV. Consequently, a type-I heterojunction forms between InN and YSZ in the straddling arrangement. The low lattice mismatch and high band offsets suggest potential for use of YSZ as a gate dielectric in high-frequency InN-based electronic devices
Bandgap and effective mass of epitaxial cadmium oxide
The bandgap and band-edge effective mass of single crystal cadmium oxide, epitaxially grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy, are determined from infrared reflectivity, ultraviolet/visible absorption, and Hall effect measurements. Analysis and simulation of the optical data, including effects of band nonparabolicity, Moss-Burstein band filling and bandgap renormalization, reveal room temperature bandgap and band-edge effective mass values of 2.16±0.02 eV and 0.21±0.01m0 respectively
Valence band offset of the ZnO/AlN heterojunction determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy
The valence band offset of ZnO/AlN heterojunctions is determined by high resolution x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The valence band of ZnO is found to be 0.43±0.17 eV below that of AlN. Together with the resulting conduction band offset of 3.29±0.20 eV, this indicates that a type-II (staggered) band line up exists at the ZnO/AlN heterojunction. Using the III-nitride band offsets and the transitivity rule, the valence band offsets for ZnO/GaN and ZnO/InN heterojunctions are derived as 1.37 and 1.95 eV, respectively, significantly higher than the previously determined values
Examination of the itch response from the raphides of the fishtail palm Caryota mitis
The raphides in the mature fruit of the fishtail palm Caryota mitis Lour. were isolated by mechanical separation. These were shown by X-ray crystal analysis to be calcium oxalate monohydrate (Whewellite). The application of an aqueous suspension of the raphides to intact human skin results in an immediate, severe itch sensation. An investigation of this phenomenon appears to indicate that this is due solely to a mechanical action of the calcium oxalate needle and not to the previously postulated action of organic toxins or enzymes introduced through the skin by the penetrating action of the raphides.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23600/1/0000562.pd
Replenishment of selenium deficient rats with selenium results in redistribution of the selenocysteine tRNA population in a tissue specific manner
AbstractWe reported previously that the selenium status of rats influences both the steady-state levels and distributions of two selenocysteine tRNA isoacceptors and that these isoacceptors differ by a single methyl group attached to the ribosyl moiety at position 34. In this study, we demonstrate that repletion of selenium-deficient rats results in a gradual, tissue-dependent shift in the distribution of these isoacceptors. Rats fed a selenium-deficient diet possess a greater abundance of the species unmethylated on the ribosyl moiety at position 34 compared to the form methylated at this position. A redistribution of the SecâtRNA isoacceptors occurred in tissues of selenium-supplemented rats whereby the unmethylated form gradually shifted toward the methylated form. This was true in each of four tissues examined, muscle, kidney, liver and heart, although the rate of redistribution was tissue-specific. Muscle manifested a predominance of two minor serine isoacceptors under conditions of extreme selenium-deficiency which also appeared to respond to selenium. Ribosomal binding studies revealed that one of the two additional isoacceptors decodes the serine codeword, AGU, and the second decodes the serine codeword, UCU. Interestingly, muscle and heart were the slower tissues to return to a `selenium adequate' tRNA distribution pattern
Superhero comics and the digital communications circuit: a case study of <i>Strong Female Protagonist</i>
This article examines the ongoing superhero webcomic Strong Female Protagonist (2012-present), by Brannon Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag and employs it as a case study to analyse the new communications circuit created by the digital production and delivery of comics. It adopts a perspective drawn from Book History to frame the communication model of print comics and to evaluate how webcomics such as Strong Female Protagonist redefine the role of readers, authors and publishers
Deformation Quantization of Bosonic Strings
Deformation quantization of bosonic strings is considered. We show that the
light-cone gauge is the most convenient classical description to perform the
quantization of bosonic strings in the deformation quantization formalism.
Similar to the field theory case, the oscillator variables greatly facilitates
the analysis. The mass spectrum, propagators and the Virasoro algebra are
finally described within this deformation quantization scheme.Comment: 33+1 pages, harvmac file, no figure
Deformation Quantization of Geometric Quantum Mechanics
Second quantization of a classical nonrelativistic one-particle system as a
deformation quantization of the Schrodinger spinless field is considered. Under
the assumption that the phase space of the Schrodinger field is ,
both, the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal and Berezin deformation quantizations are discussed
and compared. Then the geometric quantum mechanics is also quantized using the
Berezin method under the assumption that the phase space is
endowed with the Fubini-Study Kahlerian metric. Finally, the Wigner function
for an arbitrary particle state and its evolution equation are obtained. As is
shown this new "second quantization" leads to essentially different results
than the former one. For instance, each state is an eigenstate of the total
number particle operator and the corresponding eigenvalue is always .Comment: 27+1 pages, harvmac file, no figure
